“The more you know of your history, the more liberated you are.” -Maya Angelou

Celebration Theatre is collecting video casting submissions from transgender and nonbinary theatre-makers and performing artists based in Los Angeles for its Pride program, Tales of the Transcestors, directed by Shaan Dasani (he/they) and produced by Amanda Kruger (they/them). Based on true accounts, Tales from the Transcestors is an interpretive first-time live telling of transgender stories across history. A multi-genre experience inclusive of music, poetry, and one-acts, 6 artists of intersectional transgender experience bring their interpretation of these stories to the stage.

Director Shaan Dasani: "History—for transgender people—has been largely erased or unrecorded. Though we have existed throughout all of the time, through every land. We know this because we can feel...them—our transcestors. We can feel their joy, their pain, and their power in the deepest part of ourselves. A knowing, without knowing, that we are only here because of them."

Devised over a 3-week rehearsal process beginning early May 2022, the 75-minute production will run for 7 performances at The Broadwater Main Stage during the 2022 Hollywood Fringe Festival.

How To Submit

Please submit a 1-2 minute video detailing a historical trans person you admire. We are interested in discovering stories about people from different cultures, across time! Tell us who they are, where they lived, when they lived, and why you are drawn to telling their story. Please share your video as a link, which can be an unlisted video on YouTube etc.

PLEASE NOTE: To safeguard in particular the health of those who may be immunocompromised, we can only accept submissions from performers who are fully vaccinated and boosted. Hiring is contingent upon furnishing proof of vaccination, as well as the agreement to Covid Safety Policy precautions, which will include proper masking when not actively rehearsing and performing.

While Tales of the Transcestors is seeking trans and nonbinary artists specifically, please note that Celebration Theatre fosters an expansive casting process that is inclusive to all gender identities, racial identities, ethnicities, and abilities.
