Impact

"I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a
human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being."
Oscar Wilde

Theatre

As one of our country's longest-running LGBTQIA+ theatres, Celebration has a history of creating award-winning, inspiring, engaging, entertaining theater that celebrates the LGBTQIA+ experience. Celebration Theatre has grown with the community, expanding its vision and ambition while producing a wide range of theatre, from new voices to new visions of old favorites.

History

Celebration Theatre was founded in 1982 by gay rights pioneer and co-founder of the Mattachine Society, Chuck Rowland, when he leased a storefront in Silver Lake to start what he billed as, “the only theatre in Los Angeles dedicated exclusively to productions of gay and lesbian plays.” What started in that storefront launched LA's oldest theatre dedicated to producing LGBTQIA+ work in the United States.
